Genre: Avant-Garde Subject: Abstract Medium: Mixed Media, Collage Surface: Board Country: Romania Dimensions: 12 1/4" x 14" x 3/4" Dimensions w/Frame: 21 1/2" x 23 1/2" Harry Guttman (born in Bucharest in 1933 ) is a Romanian painter, now Israeli Harry Guttman began his artistic studies in Romania under the direction of some of Romanian's premier artists, Marcel Janco, Jacques Herold and Victor Brauner, Alexandre Istrati and Natalia Dumitresco. He exhibited for the first time at the Romanian Academy of Fine Arts in 1963 and won international competitions . He emigrated to Israel in 1974, and became even more active, exhibiting in Europe and North America. His works, figurative and cubist, very influenced by Matisse , Sonia Delaunay and Klee , mainly address three themes: women, dance and the city, especially Paris. Guttman became a member of the Romanian Association of Painters at the age of twenty-eight. Many of his paintings and lithographs were purchased and displayed at the official exhibitions by the Romanian Government. During this time, Guttman was working as an illustrator, doing artwork for book jackets and movie posters. His first one-man show was exhibited at Magheru Gallery in Bucharest in 1963. He traveled to Moscow and Leningrad in 1964 for further studies. In 1966, he won third prize at the International Movie Posters Competition in Moscow for his poster of the German film “Goya.” During the next several years, Guttman participated in group exhibitions throughout Europe. He then traveled to Budapest and Prague for a year of studies in 1968, following that with a trip to Poland in 1969 for additional studies. With the loosening of the “iron curtain” in Europe, Guttman was able to immigrate to Israel in 1974. Today Harry Guttman resides in a suburb of Tel Aviv and still paints every day. Guttman graduated with distinction from the Romanian Academy of Fine Art in 1960.

Born in 1924, the self-taught artist seldom used models. Rather, Purdy worked largely from the memory and impressions certain subjects and objects left upon his mind. The artist only occasionally paints on canvas, preferring masonite which he considers to be a stronger and longer-lasting material. Though he admits to using gesso, Purdy is known for his special preparations of painting surfaces through a method he keeps secret. Purdy first began painting in an abstract style. He later combined the abstract techniques with representational subject matter, and would continue experimenting with new styles. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Purdy became influenced by the palette of the Barbizon painters and developed a unique approach, melding abstraction with the rigid Realist techniques to produce his signature Impressionist style. Before pursuing a career as an artist, Purdy earned a B.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.A. in Psychology from Boston University. Two Purdy paintings were included in the US State Department's "Art in America" show which recently toured Europe and several "First Awards" have been given to Purdy in competition with major artists. Among these is the Gold Metal of Honor from the National Academy in New York City.     Trompe-l'œil (French for "deceive the eye",) is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. Forced perspective is a comparable illusion in architecture. Though the phrase, originates in the Baroque period, when it refers to perspectival illusionism, trompe-l'œil dates much further back. It was (and is) often employed in murals. Instances from Greek and Roman times are known, for instance in Pompeii. A typical trompe-l'œil mural might depict a window, door, or hallway, intended to suggest a larger room. A version of an oft-told ancient Greek story concerns a contest between two renowned painters. Zeuxis (born around 464 BC) produced a still life painting so convincing that birds flew down to peck at the painted grapes. A rival, Parrhasius, asked Zeuxis to judge one of his paintings that was behind a pair of tattered curtains in his study. Parrhasius asked Zeuxis to pull back the curtains, but when Zeuxis tried, he could not, as the curtains were included in Parrhasius's painting—making Parrhasius the winner. With widespread fascination with perspective drawing in the Renaissance, Italian painters of the late Quattrocento such as Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) and Melozzo da Forlì (1438–1494), began painting illusionistic ceiling paintings, generally in fresco, that employed perspective and techniques such as foreshortening to create the impression of greater space for the viewer below. This type of trompe l'œil illusionism as specifically applied to ceiling paintings is known as di sotto in sù, meaning "from below, upward" in Italian. The elements above the viewer are rendered as if viewed from true vanishing point perspective. Well-known examples are the Camera degli Sposi in Mantua and Antonio da Correggio's (1489–1534) Assumption of the Virgin in the Duomo of Parma. Similarly, Vittorio Carpaccio (1460–1525) and Jacopo de' Barbari (c. 1440 – before 1516) added small trompe-l'œil features to their paintings, playfully exploring the boundary between image and reality. For example, a fly might appear to be sitting on the painting's frame, or a curtain might appear to partly conceal the painting, a piece of paper might appear to be attached to a board, or a person might appear to be climbing out of the painting altogether—all in reference to the contest of Zeuxis and Parrhasius. Emz spends time with trees daily to help her mind heal from PTSD in 2021. She has 'grown' over 140 trees in oil paint and digitally on her ipad. The mindful painting process she's established helps her to recognise and work through some difficult emotions. She's currently working on ways she can share these tools with others through a mindful sketching practice. Emz Finch, Artist, Painter, Emz has always been hugely inspired by the natural world, growing up on a farm in Wiltshire, South West England. At school, Emz was the art scholar and pushed the boundaries of what was possible in terms of scale and ambition for her art projects with her art teachers, making sculpture and installations which were deeply conceptual. At the age of 18, Emz became disabled overnight after a failed hip replacement and was left in a wheelchair. The decision was taken to abandon her dreams to go to art college, so she obtained a degree and went on to have a successful career in the City and then in TV, career highlights including working with David Attenborough on 7 productions. Emz found her painting again after her daughter was born in 2017. She embarked on a foundation at the London Fine Art Studios and won a scholarship to the Creative Visionary Programme in 2019. After hosting a sellout open house that same year, Emz spent the 2020 lockdown painting a series called #GreenLondon, celebrating the green spaces all around her in London. The paintings from this series were exhibited at my local David Lloyd gym at Raynes Park during COVID restrictions. Since 2020, Emz also has an active commission book selling gifts of landscapes that could not be visited during lockdown – these paintings helped people celebrate love, commemorate deaths and remember family time that was much missed. Since March 2021 Emz has been growing her forest of trees in memory of the losses, she suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. She aims to use this work to raise awareness about mental health...
